Lovesong of the Crow – The never-ending story

As part of the celebrations for the National Year of Reading 2012, Tarremah’s contribution to this serial narrative was published in The Mercury on Tuesday 15 May. We were delighted that Class 9 student Rosalia Lonergan was the featured

author, and also congratulate all her classmates on a rich collaboration of ideas during this creative writing activity.

You can read Rosalia’s chapter on Page 30 of Tuesday’s Mercury, or online at http://mercurynie.com.au/

Annual Schools Equestrian Trials

On Sunday the 22nd of April I competed in the annual Schools Equestrian Trials as the sole representative for Tarremah in a field of 65 riders. I rode my horse ‘Woodpigeon’ in the three categories of Dressage, Show jumping and Cross Country. Although we did really well together we did not win a ribbon for the school. However, I was really pleased to have been able to participate in my ‘school uniform’ complete with Tarremah logo on the saddleblanket. Hopefully I’ll have more riders to join me next year.

The Action Packed Class 9 Geomorphology Adventure Camp!

This camp once again lived up to its name … zipping students around the state to sample some of the major features of our landforms: karst topography, mineralisation, glacial escarpments and coastal erosional landscapes.  Students were physically and organisationally challenged by this camp.  It involved a different campsite every evening … sometimes setting up in the dark after a long day. The week before Easter saw Class 8 winding their way along Bruny Island’s quiet roads by bicycle, as part of their Outdoor Education studies.  Apart from gaining an intimate knowledge of the contours down to Adventure Bay that only the bicycle affords, they also peered over the edge of cliffs, refreshed themselves in the sea, shifted camp each evening and balanced a few rocks. Class 9 English – Short Stories, Writers’ Cafe and a Never Ending Story

When asked, it quickly becomes evident that there are very few differences between the elements of a novel and the elements of a short story; indeed there are more similarities between the two – plot, character, setting and so on. Without too much further investigation, however, it also quickly becomes clear that the differences lie in the crafting of these elements, and that that may not be as easy as some authors make it seem!

Nonetheless, after due practise and exercises, the main task of the Short Story Main Lesson is to create one or two short stories to read to an audience – at the Writers’ Cafe.
